BEST DOCUMENTARY ABOUT SAM PHILLIPS and the birth of ROLL’N’ROLL.

ONE OF AMERICA’S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMEDIANS

Bill Burr is considered one of the top comedians of his generation, achieving success in TV and film as well as selling out theatres around the world.  He first gained notoriety for his recurring role on the second season of Chapelle’s Show.   Bill developed a comedic style of uninformed logic that has made him a regular on David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon.   One of the most popular comedy podcasts on the web, Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast is an off-the-cuff weekly rant that has become a fan favourite.

In December, Bill’s fourth hour long comedy special I’m Sorry You Feel That Way, will premiere on Netflix and September this year, he released a vinyl album Live At Andrew’s House a recording of his 2011 Carnegie Hall show.

In 2015, Bill will co star with Kevin Costner in the movie Black or White and later in the year, Bill’s animated Netflix series, F Is For Family, will premiere featuring Bill, Laura Dern and Justin Long as the Murphy family.

Bill received rave reviews for his recurring role as Kuby on the hit TV show, Breaking Bad; he has also featured in The Heat, alongside Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy and in the Al Pacino and Christopher Walken movie Stand Up Guys.  Bill was also seen in the Steve Carell and Tina Fey feature, Date Night.

In the near future Bill hopes to have some kids.  But until then, he will continue to spend most of his mid afternoons sitting in his sweat pants learning AC/DC songs on his SG.

Bill is against organized religions and believes we should go back to the gold standard for our currency.  None of his opinions are based on any sort of reliable information.   He tends to go with his first thought because reading makes him sleepy.

Don’t miss your chance to see world-renown stand-up Bill Burr on his very first Australia tour!

‘Erotica and the Muse’, Open Studio by fine artist Emily Humphries

Painting by fine artist Emily Humphries titled ‘Inclination’ part of an open studio  (click for details Erotica and the Muse on Sat. 29 Nov. 10-6pm and Sun. 30 Nov. 2014, 10-3pm

Emily Humphries fine artist and second child of Australian icon Barry Humphries is opening her home and studio to the public.Emily is a well loved Melbourne Artist who has been exhibiting professionally since 1986. Her first exhibition seeing her placed alongside leading artists Rick Amor and Brian Dunlop.

The 90’s saw Humphries specialise in Printmaking at the VCA where she received a National Gallery Trustees Award in her first year. Emily then went to exhibit with Stuart Gerstman Galleries in South Bank.

After marrying Melbourne film composer and co founder of 80’s group, Not Drowning Waving, John Phillips, the couple and their three children moved to Europe where they worked independently predominantly in France and Italy.

Emily works across media creating magical canvases and illuminated sculptures, spaces which inhabited and build in the imagination. Her sculptures read like little stages on which still lives and symbolic narratives play themselves out.

A committed painter Emily says, “the most challenging and captivating of arts is when one can inspire a relationship or narrative within a single two dimensional frame,” Emily’s recent journey into film echos this rather alchemical idea where she asks of the viewer to try to distil what consciousness they may wish to find in their own lives through the arc of fantasy whilst she reflects on the utility of art in this regard.

In 2010 Humphries exhibited in Italy on an Artegiro Galleria award, where she was supported for three months to work beside the volcanic lake Bolsena where she ultimately mounted a show in and around notions of the Sublime.

In 2012 still with Artegiro Emily exhibited a series of photographic works captured serendipitously on her Samsung Gallaxy mobile where she explored Paris as a visceral city treading within it’s well worn romantic cliché of romantic love.

She is also working on a documentary project around how we utilize fantasy to construct our realities where she traversed Europe interviewing those she found most fascinating, including her self declared mentor, the French film maker Agnes Varda.

This Year has seen Emily publish her first Poetry cycle, The Divining Tower, written between 2010-2013, and published here in Melbourne by Little Fox Press. For her poem, Melbourne, which is contained within this collection she received an award in the Doris Leadbetter Poetry Cup 2012, which is quite an honour in the contemporary writing scene. This book will be available too at her open studio to where it is a great opportunity to get hold of one signed.

There is much more I can say about this artist but it would simply take too long. You can visit her site at www.emilyhumphries.com for more details.

This Open studio will show her most recent suite of etchings available framed or unframed and are formed around notions of the erotic.

Her South Yarra residence will be open from 10 am – 6 pm on Saturday the 29th of November and again on Sunday from 10 am -3 pm. It is a rare opportunity to get a glimpse into the more intimate world of one of our fine artists.

I urge you, don’t miss out!

Bettie Bombshell

Creator of the show ‘Blues man’ Doc White, also on vocals and guitar, conceived of this cleverly constructed and very entertaining musical pulling together a group of talented artists to see his vision come to life. Using a variety of songs by different artists a storyline takes shape.

Supported on stage by one of Australia’s premier jazz stylists,, the vivacious Nichaud Fitzgibbon, the story unfolds through song and narration delivered by director Mark Cutler, taking us on fantasy filled ride further enriched by exotic performances by burlesque queens Mimi Le NoireBettie Bombshell and Minnie Monroe.

The story line follows two people who meet as teenagers in school and form both a musical and personal connection that begins to deteriorate as they become successful. They loose contact, before a chance meeting 25 years later reunites the pair and they discover they still feel that initial chemistry and want to keep making music together. The bump n’ grind of the sexy burlesque performances give an edginess to the show end enhances the emotional impact of each song.

PEACE TRAIN The Cat Stevens Story

Regardless of whether you are a die hard fan or not, most people in the western world and beyond have been touched by the music of Cat Stevens.

It is said that in this country one in four people in the seventies and eighties  had a Cat Stevens album in their collection. Even though I was one of the other three only because I wasn’t a collector I loved his music and saw him as a spunk.

When he changed his name and adopted a religion I thought it a little desperate and strange. But that was before I became desperate and strange. He then morphed into someone else and seemingly disappeared. Regardless, I have been hearing his songs and music through the communal airways every since.

Last night I had the pleasure of experiencing Darren Coggan and Co’s production PEACE TRAIN The Cat Steven’s story at the prestigious Playhouse Theatre at Melbourne Art Centre.

This production is polished and enchanting. Beautifully synchronised music, song, story and movement produce outstanding performances by Darren and is accompanying band.

Darren Coggan is a powerhouse of talent with infectious enthusiasm. Through song and storytelling he transported me through time and space to Soho London in 1966. I found myself a fly on the wall of 18 year old Steven Demetre Georgiou aka Cat Stevens in his red bedroom, baring witness to the creation of a budding Rock Star. And so it was as Cat’s story unfolded, manifesting vivid imagery that felt authentic.

At the end of the show Darren informed us that a lot of his storyline was given to him through personal conversations with Cat aka Yusuf Islam and his brother David who walked with Cat, managing the business side, through the years of super stardom.

Above and beyond is the soulful and insightful lyrics and music of Cat Stevens, sung in perfect pitch by Darren Coggan who along with his fellow performers commanded a standing ovation on opening night.

This is a magical story and entertaining show that is really worth catching.
