ELIZA by Tom Holloway

Last night I attending the  second dress rehearsal in a packed  theatre of the world premier of ELIZA by Tom Holloway. at Melbourne Theatre Company .

It was a totally gripping and profoundly resonating one hour forty minutes. One of the best plays I’ve experienced in a decade.

What resonated with me was the human relationships both intimate and the collective.

Dr Joseph Weizenbaum, a man that felt the sting of isolation and  could not trust any living breathing person to share his haunting truths created an AI bot that succeeded in helping him  uncover his buried memories,  deepest fears and judgements.

The last scene made clear that it was only through the power of emotional engagement, understanding and empathy with another human being face to face could he finally make peace with himself.

About the Show

“Dr Joseph Weizenbaum (Dan Spielman: Black Snow, The Newsreader), a brilliant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, carries the trauma of a childhood fleeing Nazi Germany. When he begins testing a new computer program designed to simulate talk therapy – using details from his secretary Becky’s (Manali Datar: The Wrong Gods) private life – the lines between code and connection begin to blur. “

Why bother Blogging?

It’s been a very long time since I have posted to this blog.

In fact, I have just spent some money  on the site  so I can actually post.  For  a number of years this site was  quite disabled due to the ever evolving technology to which I did not keep abreast.

I’ve had this blog since 2010 and want to preserve this archive  for posterity.

I also  have a heart felt soft spot for this site and  all these little event stories.  Everyone  of them lifted and  propelled  me out of a deadly vortex that I had fallen into for many years as a result of life’s trials and tribulations.

As I come from a hard copy print media publishing family I guess this expression is literally in my blood and bones and compels me to keep going even though I am a technophobe of sorts and lack drive to delve into harnessing the art of website mechanics and AI.

This is a really old website created by Alex Black,  a now estranged  muso friend of mine, who back in 2010  was sick to death of me whinging and whining about the poor practices and foul attitudes associated with the  other online sites to which I had been publishing.  So without even a request from me,  he put this little site together and presented it to me saying  ‘a nuclear bomb could not kill it.’

It took me quite a while to fully appreciate the gift he bestowed on me even though I have spent quite a bit of money on a yearly basis to keep it going.

It meant I was no longer at the mercy of unscrupulous power and control merchants to just write and publish independently.  Who would think that 16 years later I would have an even greater appreciation for the publishing autonomy this little site gives me even though this is the first post published in a number of  years.
