Looking through a Glass Onion

Fairfax Studio in Melbourne’s Art Centre is a wonderful place to experience great performance and that is exactly what I did on opening night of the Melbourne tour of Looking through a Glass Onion with John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta.

These guys are so talented and professional and as fate would have it really, really well oiled when it comes to this particular performance. It was fantastic.

This is the first time that I have seen the show so I do not have a comparison of what it was like with a five piece band as has been the case in previous years.  My experience of the night was that the stage was full to capacity with beautiful perfectly performed music and voice along with transportive and vivid imagery brought to life by John’s incredible powers of story telling. I was there with by brother, sister and a friend, all of us with very different tastes and perceptions and we were all blown away by this incredible performance.

After an extensive Australian tour John and Stewart are off to perform in New York to pay special homage to the indelible John Lennon.

In this entertaining and candid interview, two of Australia’s finest musician/entertainers talk frankly about the history, motivation and journey of their John Lennon show “Looking through a Glass Onion”, from it’s inception over 20 years ago to the current lean, powerful incarnation, and how they are finally taking it to Lennon’s home town, New York.

Insightful, passionate and at times utterly hilarious, they share their stories, reflections and feelings on everything from John Lennon’s life, his music and Yoko Ono to the meaning and motivation behind the show, easily riffing off each other like the old mates and fine raconteurs they are.

Finishing off with a stunning musical performance, this is a must-see, and an utter treat for both John Lennon fans and the uninitiated alike.

‘The Divining Tower’

by the beguiling Emily Humphries

[youtube=http://youtu.be/RIhP04k1exg&rel=0]

The Divining Tower is a selection of 25 poems from an epic body of 85 inspired works written between 2010 and 2013 by well known artist, writer and painter Emily Humphries.

Raw, visceral and honest, Humphries’ autobiographical tapestry of word, thought and feeling almost defies gravity as she explores, laments and celebrates the many facets of human love, lust, sexuality and romance in all their glorious imperfection.

Born in England in the mid 60’s amidst a dizzying maelstrom of theatre royalty, Emily is the second child of comedian Barry Humphries and New Zealand Ballet’s original member and principal dancer, Roslalind Hollinrake. Her fertile childhood influences included Blackman and Boyd, Greer and Percival at regular dinners in their Little Venice home, as well as comedic greats Spike Milligan, Peter Sellers and Dudley Moore.

Humphries’ accomplishments in the visual arts have earned her a devoted international following. Writing, her earliest love, had her winning prizes at school, and resurfaced irrepressibly in 2010 when Emily was living in the heart of her beloved Paris.

The Divining Tower took shape during that time in Paris, so it is perhaps fitting that the poetry evokes vivid 18th century imagery sliced with a wry 21st century tongue, achieving operatic impact.

The book opens with a Haiku before the contents page. It floats freely, playfully evoking the shape of a moth, a figure of transformation and the subtle subtext of the work overall. Melbourne, sitting midway in the text marks both a geographical transition and a shift in the tone of the work. It’s first reading earned Emily an encouragement award at the 2012 Doris Leadbetter Cup.

Greatly anticipated by her followers Humphries will be launching The Divining Tower, her first book of poems, on Tuesday the 15th July 2014 at Cam’s, on the ground level of the old Abbotsford Convent. There will be readings by actors Don Bridges and Janet Watson-Kruse IMDb, as well as a few surprise guests.

Exploring Emily’s multifaceted work is a deeply engaging experience. Her poetry cycle, The Divining Tower, is available for purchase at www.emilyhumphries.com, along with a selection of her most collectable paintings and drawings.

Le Cliché de Paris: (BLUE LINK BELOW) In her most recent Exhibition, le Cliché de Paris, held in Viterbo, Italia, earlier this year, Emily, in dialogue with three professional photographers, critiqued her direct experience of the emotional and physical potentialities of the Urban landscape through the use of incidental, unedited mobile phone imagery.

Singer / songwriter Lucy Gale ready to go…

Pation Pics was thrilled to bits to be asked by Dianna O’Neill Publicity to produce an interview with psychic medium superstar John Edward to illuminate his forthcoming Australian tour in November 2014.

This may sound like a straight forward thing to do for some, however, one of our biggest challenges was to brainstorm a line of questioning that would reveal new “secret John Edward business” from one of the world’s most interviewed and probed personalities.

Our interviewer the extraordinary singer / songwriter Lucy Gale was armed with 21 designer questions and she had 40 minutes in which to achieve and deliver our goal.

We were all won over by John’s exceptional warmth, charm and straight shooting honesty.

You will get the chance to decide for yourselves when our unique film footage is released in the not to distant future. This is a must see…

CIRQUE MOTHER AFRICA

DIRECT FROM SELL-OUT BROADWAY SEASON, THIS CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED PHENOMENON RETURNS  FOR IT’S  AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2014

There is nothing quite like the reverberating pulse of sprit that transcends from culture, instilling in us a sense of presence, wonder and magic. I have personally had the privilege of producing three Australian indigenous theatre productions many years ago and was taken on wild, exotic and palpably enriching mind, body and soul experiences in the doing.

Cirque Mother Africa promises an unforgettable and unique dimension; encompassing a collaboration of nine distinct cultural representations from across the African continent including Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Ivory Coast, Benin, Zimbabwe and Guinea.

This fantastic show seen by more than two million people worldwide is known as a delight for the senses that evokes passion and demands a resonating response.

It is a joy to have the chance of experiencing the traditional and contemporary essence of one of our world’s unique and magnificent continents via the grandeur of theatre.

‘Spectacular and colourful, in the tradition of cirque performances. The show of the year.’

Looking through a Glass Onion

[youtube=http://youtu.be/Ioo448p4EdE&w=800&rel=0]

In this entertaining and candid interview filmed at the Tolarno Hotel in Melbourne’s St Kildaour team had the privilege of recording two of Australia’s finest musician/entertainers in John Waters and Stewart D’Arrietta, talking frankly about the history, motivation and journey of their John Lennon show “Looking through a Glass Onion”.

Over a 22 year period this show has been successfully touring Australia and London’s West End with Stewart and John at the helm along with a three piece backing band. The difference in this season is that the show has been peeled back to it’s original grass roots  beginnings with John on guitar and vocals and Stewart on the grand piano on stage weaving the magic.  Another unique ingredient for 2014 is that after playing over 32 gigs around Australia ‘Looking through a Glass Onion’ will be finally landing in New York off Broadway, a destination that both John and Stewart  desired from it’s inception over 20 years ago .

Wicked the Musical

The town’s people arrived at Melbourne’s majestic Regent Theatre dressed to the nines and the mood and atmosphere on opening night of WICKED reflected the magical story that was to come…

Now I know why WICKED the Musical has had such acclaimed success in its travels since 2003. Every detail of this production from it’s musical arrangement performed live by a full orchestra perfectly enhancing the timbre in the artists voices, down to the last shadow artistically cast by the lighting technicians has been impeccably synchronised.

The age old storyline of who is considered the ‘good witch’ and who is the ‘evil witch’ ignited my five year old within taking me on quite an emotional roller coaster ride and I do believe I wasn’t the only stalwart adult transformed for the better that night.

This is the first time that I have seen WiICKED the Musical and indeed I knew little of the shows past performances; but I have to say that Maggie Fitzpatrick (former star of Prisoner) as Madam Morrible projected penetrating megalomania in all its glory and Reg Livermore as The Wizard pulled off the mindless monarch perfectly. I absolutely loved the messages projected by Glen Hogstrom as Dr Dillamond the Goat who is the last remaining animal teacher in Oz whose voice was taken away from him; and of course the striking Jenna Rix as the “evil green witch”, the magical Elphaba who is a champion animal liberationist vehement in her quest. Very refreshing.

In truth I would never go out and buy the musical score however I would be keen to go and see this very entertaining production multiple times because of it’s palpably uplifting effect.  _MG_2918 copy1

An Audience with Billy Holiday

The sizzling sensuality of Billy Holliday is brought to life by the incredibly talented Mama Alto accompanied by multi-award winning musical director Warren Wills in An Audience with Billy Holiday currently playing at Chapel off Chapel.

Opening night saw a full house where the mood and magic of a by gone era manifested, holding us spell bound.

Mama Alto’s beautiful and haunting voice in story and song conjures images and feelings for an artist whose struggles in life and god given talent produced an unprecedented rich and vast reverberating legacy.

A grand piano, a stool. a mic stand, great sound, outstanding lighting effects, an illuminating script and enormous talent from the artists have synchronised to produced a show that is unique, transcendent and most definitely not to be missed by lovers of music.

Colin Hay at Playhouse Theatre

The stage is carefully set  with four guitars in stands facing the audience, a wooden coat rake and wooden stool with three bottles of water to quench Colin’s cultivated thirst during his performance.

Regarding Colin Hay performing in the Playhouse Theatre at the Melbourne Art Centre as part of The Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2014.  ‘It doesn’t get better than this’ quotes Pixie Michael, Melbourne based sound and lighting maestro who did his part in creating acoustic magic that night.

The best way to describe the effect that Colin’s incredible vocal and acoustic guitar performance had on me is to say that it felt like I had arrived  home.  To my senses Colin is centred, living in a magical place where his music and songs have lives and personalities of their own. Stories in song conjuring images that transport one to far off destinations and tapping into memories and awarenesses through time and space. It felt as if the entire audience were inclusively flying through space simultaneously having the same emotional experiences.

All the usual greats were given the stage including Who Can it be now, Down by the Sea and Land Down Under.

Between songs Colin shared witty stories of his life on the road throughout his robust 40 year career and delightful and poignant memories of his loving family; keeping it real and compelling with his adorable Scottish accent and crystal clear delivery.

Colin Hay is a much loved Aussie icon. Not bad for a Scotsman who lives in LA.
